What you'll learn

  1. Basis of classification
Use symmetry, germ layers, coelom and segmentation to group animals.
  2. Non-chordate phyla
Recall the distinguishing feature and an example of each non-chordate phylum.
  3. Chordates and vertebrate classes
List the three chordate features and compare the vertebrate classes.

Order of animal phylaPlease Come Celebrate Pongal At Aunty's, And Mama's Every Holi Celebration.

Porifera, Cnidaria (Coelenterata), Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Hemichordata, Chordata.

Cartilaginous versus bony fishThe shark (cartilage, no swim bladder) must keep swimming or it sinks. Rohu and katla (bone, swim bladder) can hover.

Chondrichthyes: cartilaginous skeleton, no air bladder, placoid scales (Scoliodon, Pristis). Osteichthyes: bony skeleton, air bladder, operculum (Labeo = rohu, Catla = katla).

Biggest phylumArthropods: more than two-thirds of all named species, including every mosquito at your window.

Arthropoda is the largest phylum (jointed legs, chitinous exoskeleton). Mollusca is the second largest.

Body cavitiesFlatworm: no cavity. Roundworm: a fake cavity. Earthworm onwards: a true coelom.

Acoelomate: Platyhelminthes. Pseudocoelomate: Aschelminthes. Coelomate: Annelida to Chordata.

Q1. An open circulatory system, in which blood is pumped out through the heart and the cells and tissues are directly bathed in it, is found in

  1. annelids and chordates
  2. all vertebrates
  3. cnidarians only
  4. arthropods and molluscs
Show answer

Answer: (4) arthropods and molluscs

Arthropods and molluscs have an open circulatory system. Annelids and chordates have a closed system, where blood circulates through vessels.

Q2. Planaria, a free-living flatworm, is known for its

  1. bioluminescence
  2. water vascular system
  3. high regeneration capacity
  4. electric organs
Show answer

Answer: (3) high regeneration capacity

Some flatworms, like Planaria, possess a high regeneration capacity.

Q3. In molluscs, the space between the hump and the mantle is called the mantle cavity, in which

  1. feather-like gills are present that have respiratory and excretory functions
  2. the radula is located
  3. the water vascular system opens
  4. the notochord lies
Show answer

Answer: (1) feather-like gills are present that have respiratory and excretory functions

The mantle cavity contains feather-like gills with respiratory and excretory functions. The radula is in the mouth.
